Basic Tools
There are a number of basic tools you will need for your home and you might as well pick up a few extra for your automotive maintenance while you are at it. You want a good size toolbox that is long enough to hold a hammer, long screwdrivers and other long tools.
The weight of your toolbox may be a concern for you. You may want to purchase two or even three toolboxes to keep them organized and reduce the amount of heavy items you want to carry with you on your projects. If you divide your tools like this you may want to keep plumbing tools in one toolbox, general home repair tools and carpentry in another and automotive tools like wrenches and socket sets in the third box.
The basic tool box should include at least:
- A good quality hammer with a nail removal tool. Often called a claw hammer.
- Various size screwdrivers in both philips and flat styles. Always get good quality tools that will outlast your home.
- Level, straight edges and tape measures make sure your work looks right. If you will be doing a lot of work like hanging curtains, pictures and mirrors a laser level may be a good investment.
- At least two sizes of hand saws for wood cutting. A large handsaw to cut things like 2x4s and a small keyhole saw are a must. Pick up a hack saw and extra blades as well.
- Putty, scrapers and others. You will need these to fix small or large holes in plaster walls and for scraping off loose paint before paining a surface. Pick up wire brushes and other tools as you see fit
- Pliers, channel locks, pipe wrenches and socket sets. These are as important to home repair as they are to automotive repair. Consider purchasing other simple automotive tools like an oil filter wrench and spark plug sockets.
- Painting equipment like brushes, roller with knaps, masking tape and drop cloths. We highly recommend buying good quality brushes and taking good care of them.
- Yard tools including garden hoses, rakes, shovels, hoes and an assortment of small hand tools you can work with in small garden spots. Always get the best quality and make them last a lifetime.
There are many other tools you may be tempted to buy and if you have a plausible need for them get he best quality one there is. The rules on tool buying should be that simple. The next section talks about power tools and the not so basic tools that we talked about here.
