Power Tools and More

Power tools are for the larger home improvement projects and general construction trades. There are specific safety handling instructions that come with tools and you would be well advised to observe them. There really is no need for a reasonable person to loose a finger or an eye because they did not observe the most basic precautions.

Just like basic hand tools you will want good quality tools that are designed to last for years. You want to keep your tools clean of dust and follow all the maintenance instructions that came in the packaging. You should keep all the paperwork, warranties and other information on your tools in a folder somewhere.

Most power tools like saws and drills have strong motors that pull a lot of electricity. Many of the thin cheap extension cords will get hot to the touch when used with power tools. This is a sure sign that the extension cord you have is not a heavy enough gauge for the tools you are using. Over use of 3-way outlets with your extension cords and tools can cause a fire.

It is important to keep your tools stored where they will stay dry and out of direct sunlight. This is true for all your tools not just the power tools. Consider keeping your power tools in a cabinet with doors that will keep dust and debris out a good investment in their longevity. Always make sure that you remove any sawdust and other debris from your tools before you put them away and lubricate them if they require it.

Below are the most basic types of power tools.

Drills.

Drills come in cordless and corded versions. There are many attachments you can purchase for drills that extend their usefulness. Included attachments are sanding disc, buffing wheels, wire brush, screwdriver bits as well as the standard wood and metal drill bits. You want to keep your bits sharp, as a dull bit is difficult to use.

Saws.

Circular Saw

There are generally three types of saws to consider. The first is a circular saw where the blades are usually about 7 and a half inches and are used to cut plywood and other sheet goods as well and boards like 2x4s. There are many special purpose blades you can use with a circular saw for cutting different types of materials.

Scrolling saw

There is a blade that moves up and down through the materials you are cutting and are useful to cut patterns out of large sheets of materials like plywood. There are many blade types and lengths you can use as well as guide attachments that allow you to cut a straight edge or perfect circle.

Saws All

This is a type of coping saw used to cut in places it is difficult to reach or precision is not needed. Nearly ever construction trade uses this saw just because it is easy to get into tight spaces with where no other cutting tool could serve. As with the other tools there are a number of blades you can use with this type of saw.

Ladders

You will almost always need a ladder for something as a homeowner. We recommend that you purchase one with a high weight rating for safety reasons. Avoid cheaply made ladders and wooden ones. You will probably need an extension ladder to reach past the roof of your home and a step ladder you can reach your ceilings with inside your home.

Other tools

You may need other tools depending on what type projects you are tackling around your home and property. These articles are intended as a general intro to home maintenance and repair tools.
